Pentimento Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how the game Pentimento (“the App”), developed by Justin Thomas (“we”, “us”), handles information. It applies to every version of the App — Google Play (Android), itch.io (Android and web), the web version hosted here at justinthomas.pro, and the macOS desktop build. We built Pentimento to need as little of your data as possible.
Summary
- Pentimento has no accounts and never asks for your name, email, or other personal details.
- Your game progress and settings are stored only on your device.
- The Google Play version shows advertisements (via Google AdMob) and offers an optional one-time “Remove ads” purchase (via Google Play Billing); those Google services collect data as described below. The other versions (itch.io, web, desktop) contain no ads and no purchases.
Information stored on your device
The App saves your level progress, your audio/visual settings, and (on the Play version) whether you have purchased “Remove ads.” This is kept locally — in your browser’s storage on the web, in the app’s private storage on Android, or in a local file on desktop. We do not transmit, collect, or have access to it. Clearing the app’s data or uninstalling the App removes it.
Advertising (Google Play version only)
The Google Play version displays interstitial advertisements using Google AdMob. To serve and measure ads, Google and its partners may collect and process information such as your device’s advertising identifier, IP address, device characteristics, and general app-usage signals. We do not receive this information ourselves.
- Google’s handling of this data is governed by the Google Privacy Policy, and by how Google uses information from sites and apps that use its services.
- You can reset or delete your advertising ID and limit ad personalization in your Android device settings (typically under Settings → Privacy → Ads; the exact location varies by device).
- Where consent is required by law (for example, in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland), advertising is subject to those consent requirements, which you can manage through your device and Google account settings.
Purchasing “Remove ads” stops the App from requesting or displaying any ads.
In-app purchases (Google Play version only)
The optional “Remove ads” purchase is processed by Google Play Billing. Your payment is handled entirely by Google; we never see your payment card or billing details. We receive only a confirmation that the purchase is active, which the App uses to disable ads. Refunds and payment questions are handled through Google Play.
What we do not do
- We do not collect personal information.
- We do not use analytics or tracking SDKs (beyond the Google advertising described above, on the Play version only).
- We do not sell your data.
Children
Pentimento is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. The Google Play version contains advertising and is intended for a general audience.
Third-party hosting
The web version is delivered through our website host (Vercel) and the itch.io platform, each of which may keep standard server logs (such as IP address and request time) for security and reliability. Those practices are governed by their own privacy policies.
Your choices
- Reset or limit your advertising ID in Android settings.
- Decline personalized-ads consent where it is offered.
- Purchase “Remove ads” to stop ad requests.
- Clear the app’s data or uninstall the App to remove locally stored data.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above.
